Retail Graduate Jobs 2026: Salary, Roles and Entry Routes
Retail graduate jobs are easier to land than most people think. The sector hires more people than any other part of the economy. It also pays more at the top end than many graduates expect.
This guide covers the pay, the roles and the routes in. The salary data below comes from the UK market, named as such. The same route works in Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines.
TL;DR
- Retail is one of the biggest graduate employers, and it is not just shop work.
- Graduate scheme pay runs from about £29,000 to £52,020.
- Shop floor experience is the fastest way in.
- Most schemes test you with online tests, a video interview and an assessment centre.
Why retail hires so many graduates
In the UK, the retail sector employed 2.81 million people in 2025. That figure comes from the British Retail Consortium. It is almost 10% of all jobs in the British economy. Retail is the largest private sector employer in the country.
The money is serious too. Retail sales in the UK were worth about £492 billion in 2025. That is around 6% of GDP. The share of sales made over the internet is 28.3%.
Retail also covers far more than tills. Buying, merchandising, logistics, data, marketing and finance all sit inside retail firms. Head office teams hire graduates every year.
Retail graduate jobs: what the roles involve
Most large retailers run one to two-year schemes. The table below shows what each area does.
| Area. | What you do. |
|---|---|
| Buying. | Choose the products stores sell, and agree prices with suppliers. |
| Merchandising. | Plan how much stock each store needs, and when. |
| Store management. | Run a shop floor, lead a team and hit sales targets. |
| Logistics and supply chain. | Move stock from the warehouse to the shelf. |
| Online and digital. | Grow the website, the app and the delivery side of the business. |
Head office teams also hire graduates in finance, HR, marketing, IT and data. Our guide to supply chain graduate jobs covers the logistics route in detail.
What retail graduate jobs pay
Prospects puts the average graduate starting salary in retail at about £30,000. Schemes pay between £29,000 and £52,020. Some employers pay far more than the average.
| Employer. | Scheme. | Starting salary. |
|---|---|---|
| Aldi. | Area Manager Programme. | £52,020, rising to £98,050 in year eight. |
| Lidl. | Retail Graduate Management Programme. | £40,000. |
| Santander. | Retail graduate scheme. | £38,000. |
| Tesco. | Several programmes. | £32,000 to £40,000. |
| Next. | Logistics graduate management. | £29,000. |
Shop floor hourly pay has risen too. The National Living Wage went up to £12.17 in April 2026. Several large retailers now pay well above that. Aldi pays £13.50 an hour, and £14.88 in London. Lidl pays £13.45. Marks and Spencer pays £13.41. Tesco pays £13.28.
Pay climbs with experience. Assistant store managers in the UK usually earn £25,000 to £35,000. Store managers earn £30,000 to £45,000. Area managers can earn £40,000 to £80,000.
Shop floor to head office: the career ladder
Almost every retail leader started on a shop floor. That is why work experience matters here more than in most sectors. Our guide to sales graduate jobs shows how customer-facing skills transfer.
Aldi's scheme shows how fast the ladder moves. You spend a year training as an area manager. By week 15 you can hold the keys to your own store. By week 47 you look after your own area.
Marks and Spencer runs its retail leaders programme the same way. You start as a customer assistant. You then move into team manager work. Deputy or store manager roles can follow within 12 to 18 months.
Retail graduate jobs in Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines
Retail is a large employer in all four Padgrad markets. The trainee route works in the same way in each one.
In Kenya, Naivas runs a graduate trainee programme through its Retail Academy. The programme lasts nine months. Trainees who finish it join the company as employees.
Carrefour Kenya is owned by Majid Al Futtaim. Its retail graduate programme launched in 2023. Graduates rotate for 18 months and then move into manager roles.
In Uganda and the Philippines, supermarket chains and mall groups run similar trainee schemes. Check the careers page of each company. Ask in store about shop floor work while you apply.
How to get hired
Most schemes use the same steps. You fill in an online form. You sit numerical or psychometric tests. You record a video interview. You attend an assessment centre. You finish with a face-to-face interview.
Entry requirements vary. Aldi and Harrods ask for a 2:1 degree. Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco also accept a 2:2. There is no upper age limit on graduate schemes.
Employers look for the same skills. They want teamwork, customer service skills and commercial awareness. They also want attention to detail, clear communication and a head for figures. A driving licence and a willingness to relocate both help.
Mistakes that cost you the offer
- Generic CVs. Retail recruiters spot them at once.
- No shop floor experience. Even a few months as a sales assistant helps.
- Ignoring the tests. Practise before you sit them.
- Missing deadlines. Aldi and Harrods recruit all year. Tesco and Marks and Spencer set deadlines.
Our guide to graduate assessment centre tips shows how to pass the group tasks.
The Bottom Line
Retail graduate jobs reward people who start on the shop floor. The pay is better than most graduates expect. Aldi pays £52,020 on its area manager scheme. The climb from assistant to store manager can take under two years.
So apply to schemes of every size. Get some shop floor experience first. Then show the numbers you improved.
