Security and Public Safety Graduate Jobs 2026: Roles and Pay

Security and public safety graduate jobs cover far more than policing. The sector hires detectives, intelligence analysts, prison officers, and civilian staff who plan for fires, floods and border risks. This guide shows the roles, the pay, and how to get in.

Most pay figures here come from Prospects, which published them in April 2026. They describe roles in the UK. The routes and the skills travel well to any market.

TL;DR

  • Starting pay runs from £23,000 to £41,984 across the main roles.
  • Several of these jobs never ask for a degree.
  • Hiring takes months, so apply early.
  • Civilian safety roles hire faster and still serve the public.

Why This Sector Is Hiring

Three parts of the sector are very large employers.

  • The armed forces have 182,060 service personnel. Graduates usually enter as an officer or a specialist.
  • The prison and probation service runs on over 42,000 staff. Around 22,000 of them are prison officers.
  • The three intelligence agencies employ more than 15,500 people. Graduates can join a six-year development programme.

The private side adds more work. Councils, airports, ports and energy firms hire people to manage risk and security. So do event venues. That covers fire risk assessors, emergency planners and health and safety advisers.

Five Routes Into the Sector

Police officer

You do not need a degree to join the police. There are five entry routes. The degree apprenticeship lasts three years and you earn as you train. The two-year entry programme needs two A-levels. The degree holder route suits graduates in any subject and takes two years.

Police Now is a charity with a two-year graduate programme. It asks for a 2:2 in any subject and leads to a graduate diploma with Liverpool John Moores University.

Intelligence analyst

MI5, MI6 and GCHQ all hire analysts. The intelligence officer programme lasts six years. The minimum entry is a 2:2 in any subject. Expect online tests, a phone interview, an assessment centre and a final board.

You will also need security clearance. That check can take a year, so plan early. Our guide to cybersecurity graduate jobs covers the technical side of this work.

Prison officer

Prison officer roles need no degree. You must be 18 or over. You also need to pass fitness and medical checks, then finish seven weeks of training. Most people wait six or seven months from application to start date.

Armed forces officer

The British Army recruits for more than 100 roles. Graduates usually enter as an officer or a specialist. You must be between 18 and 29 to join as an officer. Fitness tests include a 2 km run.

A degree apprenticeship can also work. Compare both paths in our guide to a graduate apprenticeship or a graduate scheme.

Civilian safety roles

These sit outside the uniformed services and hire all year. Emergency planners write plans for floods, outages and disease outbreaks. Trading standards officers enforce consumer law. Fire risk assessors inspect buildings. Border Force officers check people and goods at ports and airports.

Councils, agencies and the Health and Safety Executive are the main employers. Read our post on public sector graduate jobs for the wider picture.

Security and Public Safety Graduate Jobs in Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines

Every market runs its own version of this sector, and the entry rules differ.

In Kenya, the Kenya Police Service recruits through the National Police College at Kiganjo. County governments also hire disaster and safety officers.

In Uganda, the Uganda Police Force runs its own training and promotion. Kampala's growth has added work in private security, events and site safety.

In the Philippines, the national police hires for uniformed and technical posts. The country also has a large private security industry, plus steady demand for disaster risk officers in local government.

The common thread is paperwork. Each service runs background checks, medical tests and fitness tests. Keep your documents ready and clean.

Skills the Process Tests For

  • Judgement under pressure. You will be asked what you did when a plan failed.
  • Written reports. Case notes must be short, clear and accurate.
  • Fitness and health. These tests are pass or fail, not scored.
  • Integrity. Declare every caution or conviction. Hiding one ends the application.
  • Team work. Shift work means you rely on the person beside you.

How to Apply Without Losing a Year

  • Check the eligibility rules first. Age, residency and citizenship rules vary by role.
  • Book the fitness and medical tests early. Slots fill up.
  • Start the background check as soon as you apply. It is the slowest step.
  • Keep one clean set of documents. Certificates, ID and references.
  • Apply to two services at once. The processes are separate, so nothing conflicts.

The Bottom Line

Security and public safety work offers steady pay, a pension and a clear ladder. It also asks for patience, because hiring takes months. Pick one route, check the eligibility list, then start the paperwork now.
